AGAINST LEGALESE

 

To those with a good knowledge of Italian the following site makes an in-depth analysis of why a large part of 'official' Italian Notices are written in an incomprehensible language, at the same time suggesting the 'efficient' administration personnel to follow simple rules based on communicative language. Question: will any of those 'efficient' Administration staff come across this site and rationalise his/her  desire to communicate in a plain, direct, straightforward and beautiful Italian?

This booklet written in 1948 by Sir Ernest Gowers titled  Plain Words, a guide to the use of English is past history for Britons, but we have suggested it to Italian Admin Personnel who knows there may be some sensitive soul to translate it into Italian and pass it around and we will not see any more those 'brutture' (horrible language) on Bank notices, gas bills, rules and regulations printed at the back of your bus ticket or the Byzantine and flamboyant language of Italian Air Force Colonels giving the weather report on TV.
